This is all for AfriKids. Who are they?

AfriKids is an award-winning child rights NGO working in the Upper East Region of Ghana. A small team of just 12 people at AfriKids UK support over 170 local staff at AfriKids Ghana, who improve the lives of over 130,000 people each year in their mission to secure and protect the rights of children in northern Ghana. They do this through projects ranging from childcare, healthcare and education initiatives, to programmes tackling complex issues such as child labour and harmful traditional beliefs. As well as running a wide range of charitable programmes, AfriKids is investing in local entrepreneurs and its own portfolio of ethical businesses to create employment, provide useful goods and services to the community and to raise funds for the Charity independently of aid.

AfriKids believes that charity should never breed dependence and is firmly committed to genuinely sustainable development. The offices in the UK and Ghana are working hard to make AfriKids Ghana self-sufficient. When this goal – made up of a range of targets including financial and managerial capacity – is met, AfriKids UK will close. This is an ambitious target, but this is truly sustainable development in action.
